ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is about entrapment — the systems, roles and expectations we live inside without seeing them — and about identity as something performed rather than possessed.

I have only ever photographed myself. Every character across every series is me: prosthetics, costume, makeup, performance. That method is the argument. If identity is something we put on, then a self-portrait practice where the self is never the same twice is the honest form for it.

Fee Roo Soo emerged as the figure that made this possible — a shapeshifter who can become anyone, and who is therefore no one. He isn’t a character I invented so much as the shape the work kept taking. Each series is a chapter: bound and testing confinement in The Rope, mocking the absurd in Welcome To The 20’s, fracturing in FRAGMENTS, consumed by the feed in Hello Digital Sunshine, and wandering The Maze.

Framing the work as a myth also let it accumulate. The images I made in 2021 could come to mean something in 2026 that I couldn’t have known at the time. The Box is where that arrives — a world where a brand governs everything and its worshippers are its product.
